When I got the Stag it was going to be sent to the breakers yard.
It had been re-sprayed before, but was done badly (drips, runs, sprayed over all the rubber parts instead of removing them first.
I decided to re-spray the stag properly, and sort out any problems along the way. At the moment I'm leaving the engine and mechanical side of things alone until the bodywork have been completed...
BODY WORK
Okay This is the stag when I got it before I stripped anything down:
The interior when I got it:
the back seat was wet through - rain had obviously got to it
The carpets were also wet... and growing mushrooms
The Rover V8 engine and ran but not smoothly - hopefully new plugs, oil and timing chain will sort this
Not many miles on the clock:
The rubber seal on the boot had corroded in places and let in water the first thing I did was drain the water out and check what rust the was to sort out:
Striping starts - all the bumpers chrome work, grill, lights etc removed:
The door cards are removed and boxed up - seats and carpets start to get removed:
nice colour of hammerite under the carpets
- so far I've found three different colours of paint on the Stag - original looking to be French blue, hammerite on insides probably to stop the rust, and a re-spray in pimento red
More to come!!!

Time for an update I think.
Been working away at stripping everything, Took the carpet out and found lots of rust... in the process of getting this sorted out - Main problem areas are the rear seat pan, and the boot where it was filled with water. also lots of surface rust to sort in the passenger footwell.
Currently in the process of stripping the sound deadening pads in the front as water has gotten underneath. Here's some pics:
Rear seat pan (a few holes :()
Passenger footwell under drivers seat:
Boot lid roof base (both sides are like this) bad filler and more rust
The dash that needs the vinyl sorting Re-trimming in leather when I can afford it (long way off yet):
Will keep you all updated as I go along.
Booking a few days off work in the next couple of weeks hopefully to get some major work done on her.
Watch this space

That's the problem - They always look good until you strip things back and find the rust. To be honest though for the year mine isn't too bad getting the welding sorted over the next few weekends.

Here you go Peter A quick update -
I've been scraping and wire brushing - The sound deadening pads had to be removed (I know they cost quite a bit) There was water underneath and had started to rust. only surface but better to get it off now then wait until it becomes a hole. Heat gun and an old blunt chisel to get these off.
The brown paper and tape is just to stop the dust getting all over the dash - They are restoring an old transit van in the workshop and there is filler dust everywhere even with the extractors on, and since I've took the hood off I didn't want it to go on the dash etc
Lovely Multi Coloured interior
The previous owner had screwed the carpet to the floor, yes Screws These had started to rust as they were 2 inch long wood screws and hung out from underneath (what were they thinking?)
Still got a little more to do - then welding and preparing next

What a nightmare I'm having - Finding one bodge after another I've decided to strip things down completely. There's rust all over the place and most is caused by bad bodywork.
Here's some photos of where I'm up to:
A nasty bodge - no welding here - just a thin panel and filler - covered on the engine bay side with heat shield sponge...
A closeup of the filler mess:
When taking the heating system out there's lots of rust (again nicely hidden by the sponge). The sponge looks like it's been added to hide the bodge but in the long run has soaked up water and cause more problems.
and another close up:
Looks like there's lots more welding and bodypannels to get hold of
The joys of motoring eh?
Maybe next summer I'll be on the road
